Dawkins & Weston Bible Week

Churches Together in Weston-super-Mare  have been running Weston Bible Week since 1980 with two weeks of the year given over for specially chosen national and international Bible teachers or speakers. In March 2008 it invited 3 speakers to address the issues raised by Richard Dawkins in his book, The God Delusion. The week’s lectures, “Scientists Look at the Bible” held at Milton Baptist Church kept a steady interest of around 300 people each evening. I must admit I found Andrew Wilson the most entertaining - apologising to us for being only 28 years of age! But I’m sure that such lectures will have been presented in churches up and down the country and will continue on through 2009. As Michael Reiss predicts in The Times (3 January 2009), ”This year will bring an avalanche of books, lectures, television programmes and articles on Charles Darwin. It is 200 years since he was born and 150 years since he was pushed to publish his On the Origin of Species . . .” Considered to have been treated badly by the Royal Society  in September 2008 Reiss believes, “Darwinian thinking clarifies and deepens religious faith.” But besides it being difficult seeing Dawkins agreeing with Reiss there are many Christians who will question Reiss’ view that God provided his “creation the ability to evolve itself, including the capacity to feel pain and pleasure.” We can be certain churches will continue to address the subject of Faith & Science in 2009.
