Dawkins & Christianity in China

In his review of The God Delusion, Roy Adams reminds us of what Dawkins thinks of God: “The God of the Old Testament,” he says, “is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction [the words are loaded]: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully” (Dawkins, p. 51).

“As Dawkins sees it, much of the world’s problems come from the blind following we give to this and other capricious gods-figments of the human mind. So with John Lennon of Beatles fame, he dares to dream of “a world with no religion.” It would be a place with “no suicide bombers, no 9/11, . . . no Crusades, no witch-hunts, . . . no Israeli/Palestinian wars, no Serb/Croat/Muslim massacres, no persecution of Jews as ‘Christ-killers,’ . . . no shiny-suited bouffant-haired televangelists fleecing gullible people of their money” (Dawkins, pp. 23, 24). (Conveniently, he ignores the massacres of untold millions by atheists such as Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.)”

I can never fail to wonder - except I was there myself once, although never militant - how some people can be so anti-God and anti-Christianity while thousands of people around the world are coming to the God of the Bible every day through accepting the Person of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Just take China for instance: in the March 28, 2009 Jane Macartney’s article is titled, “One billion souls to save” - and then she follows with, “Christianity in China is booming. With 100 million believers, far more than the 74 million-member communist party, Jesus is a force to be reckoned with in the People’s Republic. We talk to the new faithful who love China - but love God more.”

The strange things I read, an atheist writer doing his best to convert Christians to atheism in what was once a Christian country while people raised under an oppressive atheist regime clamour for the Bible and its God! - even unde the threat of persecution and imprisonment! Do we in the UK know what we are giving up - to replace with what? It’s a lengthy article but worth reading:
