Haggis - No Thanks!

It’s all been spoilt! Now we know the recipe would we who have not tasted it hanker for our first taste of haggis! Jan Moir of the Daily Mail has made such a right meal her haggis that I would have to say, No Thanks! Her description reminds me of my dad telling us kids of his first job after leaving school - it was working in the local butcher’s shop for a year before going to work down the coal mine. I can remember days at home when the sheep’s head with eyes looking out and the tongue drooping through its teethy grin raised just above the simmering mix of veg and dumpling stew in that large pot on the stove. There were other meat dishes too but we were never never raised on sausages - there was no love for bangers and mash in our house! If dad had been alive he would say they were OK for Prince the talking dog, but not for humans! Jan’s description summed up my memory of dad’s memories of sausage making quite well with her remark, “No other nation could distill 300 years of hurt into one supper dish fashioned from scrapings off the abattoir floor, and then build a tourist industry around it.” That was my dad’s memories of making sausages, or at least my memory of dad’s explanation of why we never eat sausages! If we couldn’t see or know what we were eating we didn’t eat it! And Jan, as humerous as your article is, and it was an enjoyable read when I visit Scotland again I shall not be hankering after a taste of that haggis - No Thanks!
