The Christian Faith is under siege says Lord Carey; marriage will only remain the bedrock of society if it is between a man and a woman. Bill Meuhlenberg from ‘down under’ makes the same point for his concerns for what is happening in the US.
Promoting the Coalition Vote For Marriage , Lord Carey said, “If same-sex marriage is legalised, schools will be forced to teach children the new definition of marriage - which will run counter to the wishes of many parents.” (We have already seen this is a possible threat).
Said Lord Carey, “We know what will happen, for we have already had a taste of it - it will encourage religious discrimination. A marriage registrar from Islington believed in traditional marriage, and was disciplined by her employers for it. The elderly owners of a B&B believed in traditional marriage, and were successfully sued for it. Numerous Roman Catholic adoption agencies believed in traditional marriage, and were closed down for it.
“These examples will be the thin end of the wedge if same-sex marriage is legalised,” said Lord Carey.
In the US, the Gay Lobby can put pressure on Children’s TV programmers. They can influence businesses corporations: ‘Starbuck, Willow Creek Split Over Gay Issue’. Christianity Today reports that “Change.org petitions were recently credited with getting TOMS Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie (who spoke at last year’s Willow Creek Leadership Summit) to cut ties with Focus on the Family, and with getting Apple to remove an iPhone app for the Manhattan Declaration and a business relationship with the Christian Values Network.”
Lord Carey has made his case for voting for keeping the definition of marriage as one man and one woman. “The Coalition for Marriage is an umbrella group of individuals and organizations in the UK that support traditional marriage and oppose any plans to redefine it.
“The Coalition is backed by politicians, lawyers, academics and religious leaders. It reaches out to people of all faiths and none who believe that marriage is the most successful partnership in history and should not be redefined.
“The Coalition draws upon a substantial body of evidence showing that marriage - as it has been understood for thousands of years - is beneficial to society, and that changing its definition would undermine that benefit.
“The Coalition’s petition demonstrates that there is broad public opposition to redefining marriage. The Coalition is committed to a reasoned and courteous debate on this issue, and will highlight any intimidation or intolerance shown to supporters of traditional marriage.”
